This is one of the most common questions we hear when people start thinking about blogging.
“How long should it be?”
The honest answer is simple.
It just needs to be long enough to be helpful.
There is no perfect number
You will find all kinds of advice online.
Some say 500 words. Others say 2,000 or more.
The reality is, there is no single number that works for every situation.
What matters most is whether your post answers the question or explains the topic clearly.
A simple way to think about it
Instead of focusing on word count, focus on this:
Did you explain the topic in a way that makes sense to your customer?
If the answer is yes, you are in a good place.
For most small business websites, that usually ends up being somewhere between:
- 300 to 1,000 words for shorter topics
- 800 to 1,500 words for more detailed topics
But again, those are just guidelines.
When shorter is better
Short posts work well when:
- You are answering a simple question
- You are highlighting a specific service
- You are sharing a quick update
If you can say it clearly in a few hundred words, that is enough.
When longer makes sense
Longer posts are helpful when:
- You are explaining a process
- You are comparing options
- You are creating a guide
In those cases, more detail can actually make the post more useful.
What actually matters most
Length helps, but it is not the most important thing.
Quality matters more.
A shorter post that is clear and helpful will always outperform a longer post that feels confusing or unnecessary.
The biggest mistake we see
A lot of people get stuck trying to make a post “long enough.”
So they either:
- Overthink it and never publish
- Or add extra content that does not really help
Neither one works.
It is better to publish something useful and simple than to wait for something perfect.
Where this fits with your website
Every blog post you add gives your website another opportunity to be found. It also gives you a place to explain things your main pages cannot fully cover.
Even a handful of well written posts can make a difference over time.
Where this fits with Traverse Web
If you are hosting with us, you do not need to worry about formatting or adding posts yourself.
You can send us your content and we can take care of adding it to your site.
Your hosting plan includes time each month for basic updates like formatting and publishing blog posts. Custom design, editing, or content review would fall outside of that scope.
Our goal is simple. We want your website to support your business long term and work smoothly with the rest of your marketing, without creating extra stress for you.
If you would like help designing, building, hosting, or improving your website, we are here to help.

A blog only needs to be useful
A blog post does not need to be long to be effective.
It just needs to be clear, useful, and relevant to your audience.
If it helps your customer understand something better, it is doing its job.
